How Much Should a Small Business Pay for a Website?

The right website budget for a small business in 2026 — what to spend at each stage, what to skip, and the $39/month trap to avoid.

Most small business owners either overspend on a website they don't need yet, or underspend on one that actively hurts their credibility. Here's how to find the right number for your stage.

Match the budget to your stage

**Just starting out (validating):** $200–$360. A polished one-page website with your offer, proof, and a way to contact or book you. This is exactly what my Starter package covers — you look established from day one without burning cash.

**Established and busy:** $360–$600. A 5–8 page website with proper service pages, SEO setup, Google Business integration, and analytics. This is the Business package sweet spot — the point where your website starts generating leads instead of just existing.

**Growing fast:** $600–$2,500. Booking systems, payments, a blog that ranks, multilingual support, or e-commerce. Invest here when your website is directly tied to revenue.

What NOT to pay for

- **A $10,000 agency site for a 3-person business.** The same scope from a good independent developer costs a fraction — agencies price in their overhead.

- **The "$39/month forever" website.** Four years in, you've paid $1,872 and own nothing. Always ask: do I own this site when I stop paying?

- **Fancy animations nobody asked for.** Conversion comes from clarity and speed, not motion graphics.

What you should always insist on

Whatever you spend, every professional website in 2026 must include: mobile-first responsive design, fast load times, a working contact or booking flow, basic on-page SEO, and analytics. If a quote doesn't mention these, ask why.

The maintenance question

A website is not a one-time purchase — it's software. Security updates and backups are non-negotiable. Either budget 2–3 hours of your own time monthly, or a care plan from $49/month that handles hosting, security, backups, and updates for you.

A simple rule

Spend what one or two new customers are worth to you. For most small businesses that's somewhere between $500 and $2,000 — which is not a coincidence; it's where good independent developers price their work.
